Perinatal Counselling

Perinatal counselling

Caring for yourself immediately after birth is crucial for your own mental health, as well as your relationship with your partner and your child.

In the days and weeks following birth, perinatal and postnatal depression will take hold of 15–20% of all new mothers. It is related to the dramatic shifts in hormones that occur in a woman’s body throughout the course of their pregnancy, and can result in nervousness, irritability, and anxiety punctuating the early days of your child’s life. While this is common, you could well be suffering unduly if it persists and may need to seek perinatal counselling.

At From 2 to3, we take a measured approach with all of our clients. We know the tumultuous nature of life when you bring someone new into the world, and we can help ensure that your home is one filled with love and a warm, caring light.

Risk Factors

Risk factors for the development of postpartum depression are numerous. A major risk factor is a history of depression during or prior to your pregnancy; anxiety or traumatic events during the pregnancy can contribute further, along with inadequate social or partner support.

Treatment

The importance of perinatal counselling and the treatment of postnatal depression, cannot be overstated. This has recently been highlighted in clinical research, due to its impacts upon the health of the mother-child attachment and the development of the child. The same studies considered a variety of treatment methods.

Apart from strong support networks, a variety of therapy methods have been lauded for their effectiveness – especially as the thought of taking antidepressants while breastfeeding can be alarming for many new parents. These treatments include interpersonal therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy. With a guiding hand and some patience, From 2to3 will help you and transition into your busy new life with gusto.
